Mums The Boss – The Blog

meHi, my name is Sam and I am one of the co-founders of Mum’s The Boss – a low cost, child friendly approach to networking aimed at mums who run their own businesses or work from home.

Before having children I worked for 8 years in Marketing where I wrote and produced the company newsletter as well as writing technical copy, sales literature and press releases.

When my partner and I started to try for a family I experienced various health problems and had 3 early miscarriages. Thankfully the doctors found a medical reason for the losses which was treatable with daily (self administered!) injections and 6 years later my daughter was born. Having become a mother slightly older than I had expected I decided to try for another baby soon after and 19 months later my second daughter was born. Having struggled to have my girls I was adamant that I did not want to ‘return’ to paid employment whilst they were small and let someone else have the pleasure of bringing them up.

So I researched the ‘work at home’ market and, having no experience of self-employment, I decided to go down the ‘safe’ route and bought into a franchise which, in essence, provided me with a business in a box. Whilst trying to market my business I received invitations to attend various networking events, but with 2 small children aged 1 and 2 I found it impossible to attend them as they all took place at breakfast, lunch or dinnertime – all the busiest times in my day!

Thinking that I couldn’t be alone I posted a message on to see if any other local mums in business would like to get together and form a group. And from this very small acorn of an idea Mum’s The Boss was born!

I now find myself disillusioned with the franchise route and have realised that I knew a lot more about business than I had given myself credit for! Part of my passion for Mum’s The Boss is to provide mums with as much information as possible, allowing them to make an informed choice about their working options. If I had known how much good, free advice is available and how relatively simple and cost effective it can be to set up in business I would have saved my money and gone it alone right from the start.

Mum’s The Boss continues to grow locally and is capturing the imagination of people in a really positive way. We have SO many plans how we can develop the idea and I hope that our blog will be the perfect medium to chart our progress – and our success!

It’s great to have you along for the journey!
